Julian Casablancas talks er, sings, sport...

Very interesting tidbit from Julian Casablancas, lead singer of The
Strokes and purveyor of a new solo album entitled "Phrazes for the
Young."

In the lead single from the New York native Casablancas features the
following lyric: "I just nod, I've never been so good at shaking
hands / I live on the frozen surface of a fireball / Where cities come
together, to hate each other in the name of sport / America, nothing
is ever just how you plan."

What's intriguing to me is how Casablancas is so obviously right,
peeling back the happy-layer of sport to reveal that yes, sports fans
in Boston do quite literally hate New York. And yet, given sport's
prominence, it is still a subject that seems to exist outside of the
music world. Whether it's intentional, sport and music - at least
that which is meaningful and insightful - don't seem to mix. That
shouldn't take the bite out of Casablancas' offering here. Judging
from overwhelming positive reactions to his solo effort, it could be
interesting to see if his indictment of sport gains any traction.

Wondering what Mark Sanchez was thinking...

I don't really care much for this Mark Sanchez-sideline hotdog
propriety debate. Who cares whether or not he ate a hot dog on the
sideline? Anyways, the more important issue is wasn't he aware that
television cameras are going to be on him at all times when he's
playing a game in the National Football League? We love to surveil
our players and there is no action on the field that is hidden from a
television lens. Mark, you are in the panopticon my friend. I think
we can all be assured he won't be doing that again.
